Make Video Podcast 2006 Wrapup

It’s been a good year this year for the Make: Video Podcast. I made 60 videos since coming on board in April. I’ve put together a little video of some of my favorite moments.

How to Fix a Staples Keyboard Tray

My keyboard tray broke from leaning on it. It wouldn’t have broken if they included two screws. But staples forgot.

Personalized Guess Who

My girlfriend and I were playing Guess Who one afternoon and I thought to myself how great it would be if all of the characters were people I know.

So, I set out to improve upon the dynamics of the game by replacing all of the original face cards with cards of my own creation. Now we can ask questions such as "Has your person ever lived with me?" or "Does your person have a substance abuse problem?"

The fun-level of the game has reached a mind-blowing new high.

Countertop Greenhouse

A countertop Greenhouse I gave to my mother for Christmas. Designed to help 4 small pots in a herb garden grow on the bay window at her house. Made out of simple wood, vinyl and hotglue, all parts cost less than $20 and can be picked up at various big box stores.

Cigar Box Camera

Paul Beard’s made up a cool cigar box pinhole camera.

A brief overview of the cigar box pinhole camera I built yesterday and today.

Built around a 4×5 film holder. Focal length of about 30mm, pinhole of indeterminate size, f/stop 100-150, I think. So reasonably fast — 1-2 second exposures in Sunny 16 conditions.

Lessons from Mk I that I tried to incorporate:

* use a smaller box so you can more easily remove the dark slides without muffing the shot

* tripod sockets are a good thing

* a shutter is also a good thing: using the dark slide a shutter not always effective. - Link

This then drives a 4024 7bit counter for seconds connected to a 4 input AND gate, half of a 4082, which in turn drives the clock input of another 4024 which counts minutes. A similar thing happens for minutes to hours. - Link

Neatly wrap cords without ties or tangles

The goal: a way to wrap up cords (headphones, power, etc.) without ties or Velcro straps that’s fast, doesn’t come undone, and is quick to undo. Here’s my method, any better suggestions?
