DIY Alternative Transportation

Alternative Transportation.jpg

There are many ways to get from “Point A” to “Point B”. Sometimes cars are too expensive, environmentally unsound, resource-sucking, needy, and can be just a general pain in the ass. For instance, I have never driven a car any longer than down a short street, so (to prevent being a pain in the ass to my driving friends as much as possible) I’ve always had to find alternative transportation and the internet’s always been a helpful tool for me. I’ve done all of the following things discussed (except the… illegal… ones… cough).

Hitchhiking - This site is A-Z hitchhiking. Reading maps, making signs, packing lists, who and how to approach, not getting arrested (semi-illegal), and how to survive easily/happily are all discussed in this comprehensive guide.

Catching Out – To “catch out” means to hop a freight train as a mode of transportation. This site has a lot of good information (packing, how-to, staying safe), and discusses in detail how dangerous and unsavory riding an enormous, potentially bonecrushing Train of Possible Doom really is. Ultimate thrill. Ultimately illegal. (P.S. Don’t do it. We’re just informing you as to how OTHERS do it. Cough.)

Cycling (Self) – This site is run by a cycling activist who takes great pride in commuting everywhere on his bicycle. So many resources, it’s intense. Thoroughly explains and addresses everything possible about how to get around using a bicycle as a main form of transportation. Even more information here.

Cycling (With family) – Bike riding long distances with children or other family members is discussed in this site. Highly inspirational, lots of good information. This addresses the societal taboos involved in cycling long distance with a family, particularly small children.

Public Transportation – This is an enormous resource, covering every base imaginable regarding mass transit. Every city (which has a public transporation system) contained in this index is made available here, and there are resources to get route planners, find free transit, and make the trip cheaper. There are even categories still in development because they’re the newest technology for alternative transportation. The other big list here.
