After reading 1-ups guide on on to make a portable nes http://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_Make_a_Portable_Game_System/(), I was inspired to make my own.
However, I still wanted to be able to play it on the TV. So my solution was to instead of making a fully portable nes, I simply fit it into a …

Trippy visuals from mouse cursor visual feedback

Check out this really cool video by Alex Schlegel created using a really simple feedback loop with a webcam, computer, and projector (no extra graphics processing):

Video experimenting with the feedback-induced patterns a webcam creates when viewing its own feed projected onto a wall. I connected a 1080p digital projector to my laptop and projected the laptop’s display onto a wall (the image was about 6ft. across). Next I connected a cheap webcam to my laptop and positioned it facing the wall, roughly centered on the projection, approximately 5ft. away, and as high as I could without casting a shadow on the projection. I started the webcam’s test program (the webcam seems to refresh at about 10-15Hz), maximized the window, and then filmed the wall using a digital video camera placed on a small tripod on top of the projector. As I filmed I experimented with different modes of mouse movement (freehand, circle, figure-eight, zig-zag, and random). I used Windows API calls from a program I wrote in Visual Basic to control the automatic mouse movements.

Surface Area of a Sphere

There comes a time in a person’s life when they realize something is missing…and oftentimes, they come to realize that it is because they do not know how to calculate the surface area of a sphere!

Alright, maybe not. Chances are, unless you are in some very specialized field, you will not need t…

Gmail Labs Adds Multiple Inboxes

Gmail Labs adds a new Multiple Inboxes feature today that allows you to keep an eye on multiple buckets at once while you’re viewing your inbox.

Just head to the Labs tab in your Gmail account to enable the new feature. Once enabled, you’ll get a new Multiple inboxes tab in your Gmail settings. From there, you can choose up to five different panes to display to the right of your Gmail inbox, above your inbox, or below it. For label and filter junkies, the Multiple Inboxes feature is a must. When setting up your multiple inboxes, you can use any of Gmail’s supported search operators to create any sort of search you want. For example, good choices for your multiple inboxes might include searches like:

is:starred
is:unread
has:attachment

Let’s hear which labels or search operators you’re keeping an eye on in the comments.

MAKE Labs: USB Mods from Volume 17

usb_mod_big_marker.JPG

MAKE Volume 17 just got shipped off to the printer this week, and one of the DIY builds that the interns had a lot of fun with was the “USB Key Makeovers” project by Brian Nadel. They made about a half a dozen different designs and the one pictured above is my fave. Love the idea of embedding the USB key in a fat marker often used for graffiti. This is intellectual graffiti!

There are a bunch of great USB mods on the MAKE Flickr pool too. Here are 4 fun ones, starting with the toy car by deeveepix:

Science fair fun with Hero’s Fountain

fountainphoto.jpg
A few weeks ago some of the parents at the local grammar school asked me where they could find cool projects to build for the science fair. I pointed them to the MAKE blog of course! We have tons of posts that are tagged “Kids” & “Science” that are great for inspiration.

It’s a few weeks later and it’s really cold out tonight, but I still made the trip over to the school so could check out what the kids made for the fair. As you can guess, there were plenty of volcano’s that erupted on command. However, there was one project that I had to check out.

One of the kids decided to build Hero’s Fountain based on my build from MAKE. It was great to see a kid explain how it worked. During the presentation it tipped over and I was completely soaked, but who cares….it worked! Did I mention it’s cold out?
