Hack a Female USB Port to a Motorola Phone Charger

I needed a wall charger for my iPod, but I didnt want to fork over 30 bucks for the Apple wall charger. I had a extra Motorola USB charger, which would work nicely except it had a miniusb jack at the end. I looked for a mini usb to regular usb converter but came up empty. The only option left was to take the charger under the knife.

This Instructable will show you how to take a USB Motorola Phone Charger and stick a female usb charger for charging USB devices, which in this case is an iPod.

WARNING: After this is done you will no longer be able to charge your RAZR(and probably other motorola models) phone, since a special circuit is needed to get the phone into charge mode. I’ll update this instructable as soon as I fix the issue.

Find your next iPod with iPod Radar

ipodradar.png

If you need some help choosing the perfect iPod for your needs, you might want to head on over to iPod Radar, a nice mashup of various shopping API’s.

Not only can you find the latest iPod deals and accessories here, you can also browse various iPod news, blogs, updates, etc. In addition, if you’ve got a very narrow iPod focus in mind (running, audiophile, in the car), you can check out the latest and greatest models for that as well - a pretty handy gift-giving guide, overall.

Carry Your iPod in a Book

ipodbook.pngCommute? Want to pretend you’re learned? Carry your iPod in a book. A Flickr usr came up with a nice DIY to mask your illiteracy.

Step 1. Get a book.
Step 2. Cut holes in it.

Works for just about all MP3 players. Well, maybe not the Zune.

Carry your iPod in a book

Flickr user izatchu has turned an old hard cover book into one of the coolest iPod carrying cases these eyes have ever seen.

The idea is very simple: Just hollow out a book with room for your iPod and accessories. The Flickr pool doesn’t go into detail on this process; luckily we’ve covered the DIY secret hollow book before. Oh, and if you can believe it, this will work for non-iPods as well, so if the Zune is your new favorite MP3 player, you can still make the case!

iPod Shuffle keychain cap on the cheap

I recently picked up two refurbished iPod Shuffles from Apple. They’re selling them cheap now that the new model is out. They seem to be sold out of the 512MB model for $29, but as of Nov. 9 2006, they still have the 1GB model for $59. My wife and I wanted to throw them on our keyring so that we’d always have them around if we found ourselves in a waiting room, etc.

The problem is, the caps that attack to keyrings are either stupidly expensive for what they are, or they come with a whole "case system" of lanyards and cases and crap we don’t want. Since Apple included a lanyard cap in the box, I started looking around my desk to see what I could do. A few minutes later I had a working keychain cap.

DIY 2G iPod Shuffle travel case

diy%20ipod%20shuffle%20case.png

DIY web site Instructables makes great use of the new Apple iPod earbud case to create a travel case for the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle.

This project isn’t for everyone, but if you’ve got (or plan to get) a new iPod Shuffle and the new in-ear headphones, this post’s for you. We’re all about reducing the Apple tax (DIY RAM upgrades, anyone?), and this simple DIY project should help you do just that. The finished prodcut looks pretty damn good, to boot.

iPod Shuffle Travel Case

ipodv2.jpgAlthough only applicable to a select few people—2nd Gen iPod Shuffle users who also have the in-ear headphones—this mod is pretty cool. Basically, you stick your iPod Shuffle into the case that comes with the headphones after you cut out the two little pins. That’s all. So it’s not really a mod so much as an organizational technique.

Now to find a way to make this a bit more Altoid-y.
