altoids PSP recharger

This is my first instructable so don’t judge too harshly. This project came to be when I thought "Hey, Sony is evil, they don’t have any inexpensive alternatives to their battery packs" I find out now that other companies have made external battery packs (but what’s the fun in buying one anyway!). So I set out on an epic journey to create an external battery pack for my PSP. Enjoy!

Control iTunes with your PSP

psp%20itunes%20remote.png

Web site PSP Updates has a tutorial for turning your PSP into an iTunes remote control, allowing you to control iTunes from the comfort of your shiny PSP.

Basically, you run a web server on your PC that serves up a PHP page from which you can control iTunes that fits ever-so-nicely on your PSP’s screen. The geek factor on this one is on the higher end of the scale, but it certainly looks doable. We recently posted about an iTunes remote for Mac-to-Mac remote control, but this PSP-to-PC remote looks pretty great. If anyone out there has tried this, let us know how it worked for you in the comments. Thanks Andrew!

PSP Lunchbox

Insidelunchbox-1

A soft and friendly psp lunchbox mod action.

Now I was a little worried about my PSP and game bouncing around inside my new ironic metal lunch box so I went and got a large padded shipping envelope and cut it down by tracing the sides into one big insert. I made a single piece in the shape of a cross and taped it all up with some white duct tape. I taped it to the tin first and made a nice and tight fit. My PSP and games in Minidisc cases fit just with some headphones about right without much bouncing around. - Link

First Look: PSP Camera, GPS Unit

psp%20gps.jpgEarlier this week we first heard about the PSP camera and GPS unit. We thought we we’re going to have to wait until the Tokyo Game Show next month to see it, but no-no. Here are some of the first pictures of these accessories. Hit the jump for more images.

For those that don’t want to wait for GPS on the PSP, you can always do-it-yourself.

Sony To Introduce PSP Camera and GPS Capabilities Next Month

sonypsp.jpgNext month’s Tokyo Game Show (you know, the video game expo that wasn’t killed) will see the official introduction of a camera and GPS module for the Sony PSP. Also making an appearance will be the navigation software used by the GPS receiver, but then again, you probably could have guessed that. No pictures (or, what’s that called…oh! concrete information) have been released just yet, but when the show kicks off on September 22, expect Sony to pull out all the stops in an effort to revive its floundering handheld.

Download of the Day: TubeSock

tubesock.png

Mac OS X only: Shareware program TubeSock downloads your favorite YouTube videos, converts them, then copies them to your iPod, Mac, or PSP.

I was pretty excited about TubeSock until I saw the shareware price ($15), since we at Lifehacker do our best to keep most of our downloads free of charge. I perked up a little, though, when I noticed that until you register, TubeSock will only convert the first 30 seconds of a video. While you won’t be able to grab every video on YouTube using the free demo, there are still plenty of YouTube videos out there under 30 seconds, so TubeSock might still be a handy app to have in your back pocket. Thanks Gary!

DIY: PSP, GPS Connection

psp_gps.JPGFinally, my PSP may actually become useful! This is a “simple” way to connect a GPS adapter to your PSP. It costs around $130, so it is a bit cheaper than most other GPS units. Here is what you need:

• Holux GPSlim236 (~$100)
• Intec G6704 PSP Remote Control (~$11). Alternatively you can rip the connector of your original remote control.
• USB (Mini B) cable ($5-10) (don’t use the included USB power cable)
• 1K 1/4watt resistor (>$1)
• Electric tape ($2 roll)

Bust out the soldering gun and follow the somewhat complicated instructions that the guys at Deniska’s have put together. Sounds like a nice little project, especially if you happen to be one of the many PSP owners who have retired the PSP for lack of good use—like myself. Thanks, wraggster.

Homebrew Sony PSP Motion Sensor

It must be super crazy, wacky, motion sensor video day here at Gizmodo. This “PS3P” showed up on YouTube and it appears to be using a DIY motion sensor along with some kind of a homebrew application that uses the motion sensor. Damn, even the Sony fanboys are knocking off Nintendo with their mods and hacks. Pow!

WiFi TicTacToe from DS to PSP

Pretty cool, this one from Makezine:
“Here is some homebrew code that will allow you to play Tic Tac Toe on a DS (touchscreen) and also over WiFi -with-a-PSP! Excellent homebrewing! [via]”

Stream Video from PC to PSP

Another thing i’m able to do with the LocationFree unit is stream video from my PC to my PSP. Below is a video of that in action. There is a bit of delay due to encoding, but it looks damn good.
