Harry Potter Halloween {Dobby}

Our family loves Harry Potter. We also love group Halloween costumes. The two go perfectly together! In the next few posts, I want to share with you some of our DIY Harry Potter costumes that are fast, easy, and inexpensive. Harry Potter loving families can’t go wrong with these!

Our youngest son hasn’t seen Harry Potter yet, but he knows all the characters from his older brothers. They thought that he would make the perfect Dobby, so we gave it a whirl. Dobby is a house-elf and is described as being about 3 1/2 feet tall with “large, tennis-ball-like green eyes, a pencil-like nose and long, bat-like pointed ears.” When we first meet him in the books, he wears a body-covering pillowcase for his “clothes.”

Adjust the size of the pillowcase using yarn ties at the shoulders

Since he is described as wearing a pillowcase, there is no easier costume than to use an actual pillowcase. I found one of my old pillowcases that I no longer use and cut an opening for his head. Once I had the right size, I had him slip it on so that I could find the right spot to cut arm holes. A pillowcase isn’t the exact right shape for a child, so I used some yarn to gather the excess fabric on each side at his shoulders. I tied the yarn in a bow, and it turned out to be a cute addition that worked perfectly!

Adjust the cap for the correct size… rubberband the excess and then roll it under to make it nice and snug.

For Dobby’s cap, I used the elastic waistband of an old pair of nylons. I left about six inches of nylon attaches so that there was room to adjust. Once I found the right size for my 2 year old, I gathered the excess in a rubberband at the back of his head and simply rolled it underneath.

You could cut it to the exact size and tack it under, but this allows the hat to be resized for different people. This also had the extra benefit that it made the cap nice and snug. The nylon material gave him the perfect look of being bald.

Dobby’s ears are made out of brown felt. I drew out the shape that I liked and then cut two pieces for each ear. I then used my handy dandy hot glue gun to glue the very edges together, leaving the side that attaches to the cap open. I then stuffed them with a little bit of batting to give them some shape. Once I had them just how I liked them, I had my son try on the hat and marked the place where I wanted them on the nylons. A little hot glue, and the cap was complete.

Dobby is a very easy and super cute costume! With minimal time and materials that you most likely already have at your house, you can make your own DIY Dobby costume this Halloween.
